Scottsdale golf course preparation for Season

best golf course in scottsdale

As we get closer to
Scottsdale golf course opening day we wanted to give you a quick update regarding a few of the summer projects that we have been working on.  As you know, the two biggest summer projects that were undertaken were the Scottsdale golf course Men’s Locker Room and Grille update along with the update to the Comfort Station on Hole 12.  The men’s locker room is nearing completion in time to start the 2021-2022 season and we plan on having the Locker Room and Grille open for service beginning Friday!  Please do not bring any personal items prior to the 22nd, as the lockers will not be available. Please note that the outdoor patio at the best golf course in Scottsdale will be closed until its completion in early Winter and we will keep the grille closed on Monday’s until the final items can be completed in that area.  We will also be likely closing the locker room for periods of time so that we can finish any punch list items remaining.  We will communicate those to you in advance so that you can properly plan to get any items out of your locker. Thank you for your understanding in advance.

In addition, the comfort station at Scottsdale golf course on 12 is coming along very well, but will not be finished in time for opening weekend as we wait on a few finish items for the space. We will have a temporary comfort station in place at the best golf course in Scottsdale until the completion of the renovation which will allow you to use restroom facilities on the back nine when playing.

Country Clubs in Phoenix see busy Summer

country clubs in Phoenix

The summer is flying by! We are continuing to build programs and schedules for the coming Season and they will be available on ForeTees throughout the months ahead. Please keep an eye out for your favorite events, and plan to participate.

Country Clubs in Phoenix plan to get back to our Traditional events at similar times as they were before COVID turned our world upside down.

Our Fall Member-Member tournament, THE RODEO, for women and men will be played in November. We anticipate a full field, so be prepared to sign up on ForeTees as of September 1st at 7 a.m. You are welcome to play with any member you choose for this tournament.

Other dates to keep in mind for your scheduling purposes are our Scottsdale country clubs

Fall overseeding dates where the course and practice range will be closed from September 27th through October 21st and will reopen on Friday October 22nd.

If this next message is a sign of the times, we hope it doesn’t last long.

Regarding overseeding at Country Clubs in Phoenix, did you know that we overseed 90 acres of turf each fall, as many as any club in the valley. It takes approximately 77,000 lbs. of rye seed to get this done. Last year the seed was $1.09 per pound, we locked our buy-in at $1.55 which was the rate 7 months ago.

The rate today, if one did not have a rate locked in ahead of time, is $2.05 per lb., oh my!!!!

Water, water everywhere!

As I compose this letter,  it is raining like we have not seen in years at Scottsdale country clubs.

In the last 10 hours we have measured 1 and ¾ “ inches and more to come in the next 24 hours.

We have been in a drought for years so hopefully this will help fill our water sources throughout the state, which we need desperately to irrigate our golf courses in the future.

End of Summer at Country Clubs in Phoenix

As we go through the summer months, the management team at Scottsdale country clubs is busy planning for the winter and spring seasons with many of your favorite events as well as a number of new ones as we celebrate another fantastic year at Scottsdale tennis club. This social calendar will be made available to the membership at the beginning of September so that you can properly plan to be at the Club.  If you should have any questions regarding this information please don’t hesitate to contact me at your convenience. We look forward to a continued summer activities as we get closer to the fall season!

As they say we are now on the downhill of 2021 at Scottsdale country clubs.  We have wrapped up our annual aerification and top-dress program in July this year, which happened a month later than we have done in the past years.  It seemed to work in our favor with an early monsoon season coming about 4-5 days before the project started.  With the exception of a few days, we have had continued high humidity and dew points throughout the month of July.  We also had a bonus 3.5” of rain over a 4 day span.  This has been very beneficial for the turf recovery from the aerification process and also the transition from Ryegrass back to the Bermudagrass base.  Scottsdale country clubs will be focusing on the last remaining high traffic areas and old weak sodded areas over the next week or two with additional cultural practices and nutrient inputs until we have 100% recovery.  Overseed can be very damaging to our base crop of turf. This process scientifically will cause 15% turf loss alone without any other damaging factors (weather conditions, water, cart traffic, etc.)  Course wide we have 91 acres of turf, so according to the turf science experts we should have 13.5 acres of weak/void turf areas. I can say very confidently that we are well below even ½ acre of these types of areas across the whole course.  There is not one specific reason for this, but I do know that the decision to do a full overseed with the wall to wall one cut throughout the season was very helpful in making this possible.

We are in process of making our first Pre-Emergent application in preparation for the winter season ryegrass control of the nuisance Poa Annua weed.  Also over the next few weeks we will be prepping for the two remaining tournaments of the summer at Country Clubs in Phoenix. (Ladies Scorcher and Men’s Inferno).  We are looking forward to seeing many of you around the course again for these popular events.  The third week of September, The Scottsdale Country Club will begin our annual prep for the overseed closure on September 27th.

Country Clubs in Phoenix Prepare for Fall Season

country clubs in Phoenix

It is hard to believe that we are already into August and less than 60 days from beginning overseeding at Country Clubs in Phoenix  for the winter season.  With the monsoon activity and the aerification and topdressing work that Dana and his team have been doing, the golf course should continue to improve over the coming weeks and into the winter season.  This summer has seen some return to normalcy as many members and families have once again used this time to get out of the valley and enjoy cooler temperatures elsewhere.  With school ramping back up during the month of August I expect to see many of you back here soon.  The men’s locker room and grille project is progressing nicely with demolition complete and electrical, plumbing, framing and drywall being done currently.  We are still on track to open the locker room interiors portion of this project during opening week barring any unforeseen issues moving forward.  The exterior portion is expected to follow closely in the two weeks following with an anticipated opening of mid-November.

Scottsdale country clubs is so very excited to welcome our new Executive Chef, Tim Loving during the month of August as he officially joins the team on the 3rd.  I have had many members stop me to let me know how much they are looking forward to meeting Chef Loving and seeing some updated menu options in the fall.  As he comes on board, I know that you will see some great new favorites through our various dining outlets as he collaborates with his culinary team.  In other staffing news, we also recently welcomed Austin Cannon to the team who will serve as an Assistant Manager and will be working in the Clubhouse to supervise the front of the house team in the daily operations of our Food and Beverage program.  We are excited to have both on our team as we enter into our busy fall and winter season.

While many of you are away from the Country Clubs in Phoenix, Club Committees as well as the Board of Directors are busy planning for another successful 2022!  The Finance Committee and Board will be reviewing and approving the FY2022 operating and capital budgets during the month of August.  This budget process is not an easy one this year as we have seen so many challenges present themselves with an extremely difficult labor market which has resulted in the need to raise wages for most all of our line level and supervisory level positions in order to remain competitive in the marketplace.  As many of you know, labor is the largest expense that Country Clubs in Phoenix have each year and we are expecting our labor expense in 2022 to be roughly 60% of our budgeted revenues or roughly $9 million annually.  This is primarily due to the fact that we are a year round operation with significant amenities in golf, food & beverage, fitness and childcare offerings.

In addition to this we are seeing significant increases to our operating expenses at Scottsdale tennis club.

and the cost of food and beverage items and golf course maintenance items which has our biggest operating expense at Scottsdale tennis club.

For instance, in golf maintenance, for our annual overseeding of the golf course we are seeing very limited availability for ryegrass seed which is due to the fires and high temperatures in the northwest and many courses in the valley and in the south will not be able to overseed this coming year.  Along with the limited availability, we are seeing prices of seed grow by more than 60% and they are continuing to increase for the coming year.  This coupled with significant increases to fertilizers and chemicals for the golf course are most definitely putting a strain on the coming year’s business plan.  Please know that the team along with the Finance Committee and Board are taking a hard look at all of these items and others as it prepares and approves the budget so that we can maintain the member experience and keep interest at  Scottsdale country clubs where it is at currently and that is at an all-time high.

Speaking of membership, the past six months have seen record interest for prospective members.  Melanie and the Membership Committee have been hard at work in taking these prospective members through the process, which is very detailed and thorough.   Our waitlist for Golf Membership at Scottsdale country clubs now sits at around two years or so to join with nearly fifty approved prospects on the list and our lone membership available for sale in August was sold for $150,000.  In other categories we are looking at a waitlist of between 18 months and three years depending on the category of membership. We have had very limited movement with memberships available for sale over the past few months and the Membership Committee and Board are closely monitoring this as we move forward so that we can keep our current members engaged as well as those on the waitlist for membership.  This is all far different than when I first came to the Club in 2007 when we had a significant waitlist to get out and many memberships available to sell.

Why Does the best golf course in Scottsdale Aerate So Much?

If you think about the amount of footsteps walked on a green each day… it’s a lot. The average golfer at the Scottsdale golf club

will take about 45 steps on any green.  So to get a number of steps on a green any given day, we need to multiply 45 times the foursome that is playing in the group. That makes 180 steps per foursome.  Now, multiply 180 times the number of foursome that play on that course per day (about 72 foursomes).  That is 12,960 steps per day on each green.  To that extreme, multiply that, times the days in the year, 365. That equals over 4.7 million steps! Now think about all of the equipment that is used in maintaining the greens throughout the year.  Some of these pieces of machinery can weigh over a half ton. Run a mower over a green 180 times a year and that is an additional 180,000 pounds of compression per year.  Compacted? I would say so.

Playing conditions at the Scottsdale golf club are of the utmost importance for most golfers, and aeration is needed to keep turf healthy and playing well.  Aeration can be disruptive, but the long-term benefits of aeration far outweigh the short-lived disruption.  The next time you play on greens that were recently aerated, keep in mind that aeration is performed for the long-term health of the course.  The greens may not play their best immediately following some aeration treatments, but everyone is playing the same conditions and golfers still can enjoy the game and make plenty of putts.  After all, Tom Watson once shot a 58 when playing at Kansas City Country Club just a few days after the greens had been aerified.

The word aeration stimulates negative emotions for many golfers. It may come as a surprise, but golf course superintendents also dislike aeration.  After all, the last person who wants to disrupt the smoothness of the putting greens they work so hard to maintain is the superintendent.

Golfers often ask, “Why is aeration needed so often?”  Aeration is an essential program to keep playing surfaces healthy and in good condition.  Aeration primarily is performed at Scottsdale golf courses

to control organic matter-i.e., decaying roots and grass stems- relieve soil compaction, stimulate root growth and improve drainage. If organic matter becomes too thick, it acts like a sponge and holds water at the surface after rain or irrigation.  Excessive organic matter also inhibits root growth, reduces oxygen levels in the soil, encourages disease and eventually can lead to turf failure. Furthermore, excessive organic matter creates soft surfaces prone to ball marks, foot printing and inconsistent playing conditions.  Aeration and topdressing are the most effective ways to control organic matter and maintain smooth, firm putting surfaces.

Core aeration at best golf course in Scottsdale involves physically removing small soil cores-e.g., 0.5-inch diameter cores- from the turf and is the most common type of aeration. Aeration hold allow excess moisture to evaporate and promote gas exchange in the soil, resulting in stronger root systems and turf that is better able to tolerate golfer traffic.

Proper timing at  Scottsdale golf courses of aeration will ensure the fastest possible recovery and return to smooth surface conditions. The key to a quick recovery is to perform aeration when the turf is healthy and actively growing.  There are many types of aeration that superintendents use throughout the season; some are more labor-intensive and disruptive to playing surfaces than others.  Less-disruptive forms of aeration, including venting aeration with small-diameter, solid tines, also are beneficial because they can alleviate turf stress by promoting oxygen levels in the soil. Aeration programs that have a small impact on a playing surface generally can be performed throughout the season with little or no disruption to play.

The dates chosen this year for aerification are July 6th- 15th. This will allow us to get the whole course aerified, cleaned up, top-dressed, and fertilized. The thought process behind the later dates this year is to be closer to monsoon season when we see higher dew points and humidity which is a necessity for optimum Bermuda grass growth for quicker recovery.
